Small bathroom, big change: layout ideas that work
Five moves that make a five-by-eight bathroom feel twice its size — without moving the plumbing stack.
The stack is the budget
In most older Los Angeles homes, the drain stack sits in one wall and everything is arranged around it. Keeping the toilet and shower drain near that wall is the single biggest cost lever in a small bathroom. Nearly every idea below respects it.
Go curbless
A curbless shower with a linear drain removes the visual break at the floor and makes a small room read as one continuous surface. It also removes a step, which matters more each decade you stay in the house.
Lift the vanity off the floor
Wall-hung vanities expose floor tile underneath, and visible floor equals perceived space. Pair it with a wall-mount faucet and you recover several inches of counter depth.
Fewer, larger tiles
Large-format tile with tight grout lines reduces visual noise. Running the same tile from the shower onto the main floor removes another break, and carrying it up one wall full height gives the room a single strong gesture instead of three competing ones.
Light in layers
One ceiling fixture flattens a small bathroom. Sconces at mirror height, a damp-rated fixture in the shower, and a dimmer make the room work at 7 a.m. and at 10 p.m. It's the cheapest luxury in the scope.
Recess the storage
A recessed medicine cabinet and a niche built into the shower wall add real storage without stealing an inch of standing room. Both are framing decisions, which means they have to be made before drywall — another argument for finalizing the plan early.
